The Macau Motorcycle Grand Prix

The 2006 Macau Grand Prix celebrated the 40th anniversary of the Motorcycle Grand Prix within the famous Macau Motorsport weekend, held every year around the streets of the tiny island. Since the mid 60’s some of the greatest names of two wheels racing have come to China to take on the challenge of one of the toughest street circuits in the world. The allure of both Macau and the circuit itself has become similar to that of the Isle of Man TT.

Even though it remains an invitational event, it still continues to attract great names from Britain, America and more recently South East Asia, Kevin Schwantz, Didier de Radigues, Mick Grant, Ron Haslam and John McGuiness are all household names that have taken on the Macau challenge; for them Macau is something every racer has to do at least once in their career, as it is considered the ultimate challenge on two wheels with little or no margin for error.

The 2006 event was as competitive as ever with John McGuiness, Steve Platter and Michael Rutter going wheel to wheel at the famous circuit. To mark the 40th running of the event, Macau also invited back many of the greatest names mentioned above, as well as those that have all played a part in its rich history, to celebrate this quite unique motorsport tradition.

Green Inc has put together a one hour documentary based around the 40th event as well looking back to some of the key races that have taken place over the years. During this year’s event, Green Inc went behind the scenes and met the people who have made this pilgrimage of speed year after year.

The programme also combined extensive archive footage provided by the Macau Government to document how the Macau GP came to be and how it grew into the largest motorsport event in Asia. The event is considered by the motorcycle fraternity as one of the world’s most prestigious two wheel events and it is simply known as the greatest street race in the world.
